Press Release, 2017.
Located on the South Coast of Sri Lanka in the village of Thalpe a short tuk tuk ride from the fort town of Galle and bordered by lush jungle, Owl and the Pussycat is a characterful 17 suite boutique hotel with a laid-back atmosphere and contemporary yet comfortable design, featuring beautiful craftsmanship from local artisans. Owners Reita Gadkari and Shane Thantirimudalige have created a hotel – run by a friendly local team – that offers sophistication with a lively seaside atmosphere and access to an unparalleled authentic Sri Lankan experience.
Opened in 2016, Owl and the Pussycat celebrates providing its warm welcome to guests for a year which has seen it become a popular escape for international and national visitors alike who are drawn to the hotel’s inimitable style. Innovating in response to guest demand, this past year several enhancements have been made to the property including a new Penthouse Suite.
The new Penthouse Suite is spacious, overlooking the pool, gardens and Indian Ocean beyond, complete with a beautifully-appointed en-suite bathroom. Set on the top floor, its interiors are in-keeping with Owl and the Pussycat’s eclectic aesthetic, painted in deep pastels and vibrant bohemian hues. The new suite encompasses two cosy sitting areas to relax in as well as a balcony to take in the magnificent view. The perfect honeymoon hideaway, it sleeps two people.
At the hotel’s restaurant, The Runcible Spoon, has honed its mouth-watering dishes to delight guests and visitors. Owl and the Pussycat’s talented chefs mix the dazzling variety of Sri Lankan flavours with exciting global accents from locally-sourced ingredients. Its outdoor seating area has recently introduced a charming pergola for guests to enjoy the restaurant’s incredible sea view and delicious drinks al fresco.
There is plenty to explore using Owl and the Pussycat as a cosy base; from cycling adventures in the nearby jungle and paddy fields to seasonal turtle watching and whale expeditions; from picnics on secret beaches to taking in the fortified town of Galle; from surfing to local market visits and cookery classes with the chef.
Back at Owl and the Pussycat, outside guests are welcome to use the facilities, ensuring a sociable and relaxed atmosphere. Sip delicately-spiced cocktails at the bar listening to the waves of the Indian Ocean and during the day, relax poolside or stretch out in shade with yoga or a massage in the hotel’s own Shala.
Together with its jazz band and selection of musicians playing at the weekend, and its local learning programme and philanthropic heart, this hotspot is inspired by local influences, whilst still promising sophistication and style. Owl and the Pussycat looks forward to continuing to provide a magical, authentic Sri Lankan experience with its unique brand of luxury with plans to enhance the guest experience even further in the next year – more information will be available soon.
