The Full Experience
Embark on a voyage of discovery in Sri Lanka’s southern countryside, as your local host takes you along the rural waterways and back roads of Galle. Indulge yourself in a local cooking demonstration which takes you from the market to the island's most iconic dishes.
Begin your journey on a small vessel past the soul-soothing scenery and daily life of rural Galle. Glide along river banks fringed by local villages, rubber and cinnamon plantations. You might see the occasional tea bush and intriguing bird and reptile life, which your host can tell you about. Back on terra firma, your next leg is by bike. Take a stunning 9km ride through the region’s heart, picturesque paddy fields, hamlets and their markets.
Your next stop is a traditional mud hut and the reward of a revitalising herbal tea. Here your host will start the cooking demonstration by explaining the techniques and key ingredients used in Sri Lankan cooking. The cooking class includes a visit to a vibrant local shop where you can see the myriad of fruits and vegetables. You can witness how coconut milk is made and create your own delights by trying your hand at tempering, frying, boiling, grating and caramelizing your ingredients. Finally, indulge in the fruits of your labour - maybe even local-style - with your hands!
Hosted by Local Chef
Your host is a Sri Lankan chef with impressive knowledge of the island’s vegetables, fruits and spices. His conversation in English might take a little patience, but as this is a practical class, you can easily watch and learn how to create a range of delicious local dishes!
